From this stakeholder’s website: The Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary is the comprehensive cancer centre for southern Alberta and a lead centre for the province-wide prevention, research and treatment program. The Tom Baker Cancer Centre provides advanced medical and supportive cancer care, patient and professional education, and conducts research through the Alberta Cancer Research Institute. The Alberta Cancer Foundation raises charitable donations in support of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

Calgary Supportive Care for Cancer Patients
The Department of Psychosocial Resources, through a team of trained professionals in psychiatry, psychology and social work, help patients and their families cope with the emotional, psychological and social stresses that often surface as a result of cancer and its treatment.  The team is available to patients from the moment of diagnosis onward.

Services:
  • Individual, couple and family counselling
  • Coping with reactions to cancer: addressing family issues; confronting practical issues; exploring personal issues
  • Personal well-being checklist (Screening for Distress):  a brief electronic tool that will ensure you are connected with information and support as early as possible.
  • Resource counselling for cancer survivors:three specially trained social workers called Resource counsellors help patients with their resource needs and deliver a weekly class for patients which includes infomation on how to get help for your financial and practical needs.
  • Group programs:enable patients to connect with both health care professionals and people who are going through similar experiences;help attendees improve their quality of life and  provide patients and family members with the skills and support to help them throughout their cancer journey.
  • Classes:classes, information sessions and seminars covering a wide range of issues of concern to patients and their families.

Psychosocial support services:
1.  Assistance with complex discharge needs;
2.  Emotional support to patients and families including grief and anticipatory grief counseling, unresolved conflict and unfinished life tasks;
3.  Provides practical information and assistance with financial and legal matters;
4. Links families and patients to community resources, and helps patients and families to advocate for adequate supports and resources to promote quality of life.
