* A Note From Rob

Dear Community-based Organization / Support Group Leader / Psychosocial Professional,

We are offering people affected by a cancer diagnosis a free day-long seminar using cutting-edge webcasting technology - and with the hope that you might organize (or forward this information to) a support group at a distant site.

What's being offered?

The seminar is based on a program Dr. Timothy Walker and I have run in the past and our experience of running a successful webcasted series earlier this year (visit www.healingandcancer/8weeks). The agenda for the seminar includes short presentations (eg "complete cancer care"), teaches healing skills (mindfulness-based stress reduction, yoga, Qi Gong), and includes dyad work and art therapy within the context of a supportive-expressive group therapy experience. We will webcast from a live support group in Halifax, and take calls or emails from distant participants.

When is the seminar being held and how long will it last?

The seminar will start at 11am EST (8am PST) on Saturday October 29 and last for six hours.

Who can participate?

Anyone can access this free webcast using high-speed internet by visiting www.healingandcancer.tv during the seminar. It would be best for people to join the webcast in groups of two or more since we are asking participants to work in dyads throughout the day. People can join in from home or gather in larger support groups as long as they can see and hear the webcast (ie. data projector or big screen TV for the larger groups).

Why are we reaching out to you?

We are hoping you/your organization can host a group of cancer survivors in your community or at least advertise the seminar to your members (see poster).  As this is a pilot project, we would like you to supervise and support the people attending the seminar, and to provide us with feedback.

What exactly would you need to do to host a group?

a) Locate a space in your community. You would need to be able to connect to high-speed internet and project a webcast to a large screen or the wall using a laptop and data projector (or large screen TV) and speakers.

b) Advertise the seminar. We could provide a template of a poster you could modify. Manage the logistics of people coming together for 6 hours. (registration, 'bring your own lunch', answer logistical questions etc.)

c) Create a positive support group environment. The benefits of a support group often occur when people connect outside of the programmed activity (eg. during lunch).

Is the program free?

Yes. As a result, we don’t have the funding to pay you for your time and expertise, nor cover the costs of the venue and technology at the distant sites.

What’s the next step?

If you are interested in hosting a distant group contact Sheila.Yarn@cdha.nshealth.ca or call 902-826-1819 for more information.

Please forward this information to other support group leaders or directly to people affected by a cancer diagnosis. We would ask everyone who plans to join the webcast to let us know beforehand so we can ensure a TV-quality broadcast.

We’re very excited about this project and the possibility of working with you.

Take Care. RobR.
