C-CEN: Canadian Cancer Exercise Network
Uniting cancer exercise specialists
Current cancer exercise programs often focus on specific types of cancer, treatments or exercise modalities, and often have differing research and clinical priorities. To expand and enhance opportunities and capacities, we propose the Canadian Cancer Exercise Network, to unite cancer exercise programs across Canada. C-CEN's mandate will be to improve collaboration between researchers and clinicians, ultimately enhancing the supportive care of cancer survivors through exercise programs.
C-CEN's objective: Establish a working group of cancer and exercise researchers, clinicians, and advocates for the implementation and dissemination of C-CEN. To achieve these objectives, C-CEN is committed to facilitating: a) study/project awareness; b) collaboration on multi-centre trials and grant applications; c) basic consultation between centres regarding best practice; d) patient awareness of local cancer exercise programs; e) student awareness of cancer exercise programs for potential graduate and postdoctoral studies; and f) simple exposure of the program to the general public and other relevant stakeholders. This past summer, PhD candidate Daniel Santa Mina (York University / Princess Margaret Hospital) and Dr. Nicole Culos-Reed applied for a CIHR Meetings, Planning, and Dissemination Grant. Unfortunately, the grant fell just shy of the funding threshold. However, Daniel and Nicole will be proceeding with this important initiative that will improve the collaborative landscape of cancer and exercise programs in Canada. Given that the acronym C-CAN is already in use (Canadian Cancer Action Network); this project will henceforth be called C-CEN, for Canadian Cancer Exercise Network. Stay tuned for more information regarding the C-CEN development. If you have any questions regarding C-CEN or are interested in becoming a member of the C-CEN, please contact Daniel at: daniel.sta.mina@uhn.ca. |
