Here are Jan's notes of the collected ideas, comments, and concerns expressed by participants in the 2011 workshop. We're mulling next steps. If you would like to get involved in a project, as an advisor, consultant, group leader, ideas person, heavy lifter, whatever, let's start the conversation. If after reviewing the notes you would like to amend or append, please feel free. Jan is at cpop@dal.ca.
Website Ideas * Use the website as a clearinghouse for information, tools, templates, program evaluation toolkit * Ideas: podcasts, Eblasts/listserv/weekly bulletin, resources, webinars, Q&As, videos * Content: acronyms, terms, definitions * Resources: Pat has links to YA resources; Inventory of support and advocacy resources YAA – Norma, Sharon C; social marketing guidelines – Lorna
Follow-up * Listserv created as pilot project May 30, 2011; workshop attendees invited to participate; 22 participants as of June 2. Jan is testing content delivery. To participate, go to: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/cpop-listserv * New content added to website as of June 5/11
Possible Projects CPOP can facilitate project work, providing there is sufficient community involvement. Building the research toolkit may require external funding.
Standards * CBO standards: starting ideas – transparent governance, program evaluation in place (or anticipated), deliver psychosocial care; standards and accountability in place. Suggestion that CAPO standards say something like: “This program is in compliance with ...”
NextGen * Student symposium - mini-CPOP – online * Can CAPO sponsor students for annual conference? * Work with schools to place health promotion students in CBOs (and CPOP?)
Resources * Jan & Deborah McLeod – mine teaching materials for sexuality resources to share online
Funding * Create joint academic/CBO fellowship, to share funding (foundations will often fund scholarships, if the fit is right) * Funding models for CPOP
Toolkits * Evaluating community initiatives: a how-to guide, including how outcomes are linked to funding * Product evaluation: how to frame the research, formula, tools, gathering data, ethical guidelines * Research guide: step-by-step, modules, standards template
Research & evaluation Comments * CBOs have difficulty reconciling discrepancies in research findings * Can CBOs and health care providers drive research with their questions? * CBOs as links to patients for researchers: “Use us!”
Ideas * Pair YA survivors with YA researchers; YA researchers attend YA conferences * Student training modules: community consultation, people to look for, questions to ask * Provide regular online research support from experienced researchers
Research questions * Distress screening: linking to services, measuring uniformity of delivery * How to do product research? * QoL: maintained over time? * Do behaviors change? * Can we request Cochrane reviews?
Programs Concerns * Is the information reaching people when it’s needed and how it’s needed? Who is it not reaching? * Rural access to resources and support is a concern * How to disseminate/market programs geographically * Translating support program research for specific environments * How much benefit do we need to see? Over what timeframe? * Need for evidence-based program support * How to create and sustain PSO programs in small centres * Do brochures do any good? How do we know? * How can we enhance the effiency of CBOs?
Ideas * Pool efforts to identify gaps in programming * Identify researchers who will partner with CBOs to help improve programs
